The Washington Nationals actually did it.
After weeks of speculation and consternation, Nats GM Mike Rizzo dealt 23-year-old superstar Juan Soto (and first baseman Josh Bell) to the San Diego Padres for a package of prospects. It’s one of, if not the biggest deal ever made at the trade deadline. For the Friars, it gives them another superstar alongside Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado, significantly boosting their World Series odds in the process. For the Nats, the move completes a sudden and unexpected teardown of a roster for a franchise that won its first World Series championship just three seasons ago. Post-trade, Rizzo had this to say about the deal: “We’re in a bumpy road right now, and we believe coming out of it will be a beautiful place.”
Which brings us to today’s quiz of the day. It was just last year when Soto finished as the runner-up to Bryce Harper for the 2021 NL MVP Award. So with that in mind, how many NL MVP runners-up since the 1998 MLB season can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
